Janelle Monáe, a Kansas City, Kansas native, moved to New York to study theatre at the American Musical Academy. Her original plan was to pursue a career on Broadway, but she soon changed her mind and returned to her love for music, an art form which, according to her, has the potential to change the world. Moving to Atlanta, GA, where she met OutKast’s Big Boi, Monáe founded the Wondaland Arts Society with like-minded young artists and made a couple of appearances on Idlewild, where she is featured on the songs “Call The Law” and “In Your Dreams.”

By mid-2007, Monáe was ready to release her first solo album, entitled Metropolis. It was originally conceived as a concept album in four parts, or “suites,” which were to be released only through her website and mp3 download sites. These plans were altered upon her signing with Sean “Diddy” Combs’ label, Bad Boy Records, in late 2007. The label gave an official and material release to Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition) in August 2008. The album was generally well-received by critics, garnering Monáe a 2009 Grammy nomination in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance for her song “Many Moons” , festival appearances and opening slots for the indie pop band Of Montreal.

Monáe also toured as the opening act for band No Doubt on their summer tour. Her latest single, “Open Happiness,” was featured in the 2009 season finale of American Idol.

In a November 2009 interview, Monáe revealed the title and concept behind her upcoming album, The Arch Android. The second and third suites of “Metropolis” will be combined into this full-length release, in which Cindi Mayweather—also the protagonist of Metropolis: The Chase Suite—will become a messiah-esque figure to the android community of Metropolis.

Grace Jones is another amazing icon. Last year she released her first studio album in 10 years and she didn’t hold anything back. She’s been making a name for herself as an artist, actor and singer since 1970’s and has been at the fore-front of all that is exciting and cutting edge.

Grace Jones’s striking appearance, height (5′10½”), and manner influenced the cross-dressing movement of the 1980s, such as Annie Lennox. She would also exemplify the “Flat Top” hairstyle in many of her concerts in the 1970s, which would become popular among black men in the 1980s. Her first album cover to feature this hairstyle was 1980’s Warm Leatherette.
Jones maintained both recording and acting careers, although her acting often overshadowed her musical output; except in Europe where her profile as a recording artist was much higher. Her strong visual presence was an advantage for her music videos and concert tours. In her concert performances, she adopted various personas and wore outlandish costumes, particularly during her years with Goude. One such performance was at the Paradise Garage in 1985, for which she collaborated with visual artist Keith Haring for her costume. Haring painted her body in tribal patterns and fitted her with wire armor.”

Northern State is Spero, Hesta Prynn, and Sprout. We grew up together in deep suburban Long Island and we’ve been friends forever. We found ourselves living in NYC after college, hanging out and listening to hip hop off of Hesta Prynn’s computer (pre-ipod).

In the fall of 2000, at a party at Hesta Prynn’s apartment, we had the idea to start a rap group. So we did.

We have now been a band for seven years. “Can I Keep This Pen?” is our third proper album, following “All City” (Columbia Records, 2004), “Dying in Stereo” (Northern State Records/Startime/Wichita UK, 2003), and our 2002 independent EP “Hip Hop You Haven’t Heard”, which was supposed to be our demo. We got our start playing gigs all over NYC, and we have had the good fortune of sharing the stage in the US and Europe with the Roots, Le Tigre, Talib Kweli, De La Soul, The Gossip, Gym Class Heroes, Tegan and Sara, and Cake.

I thought this album would never come out! She has been teasing us all for years with one off tracks and now finally a full length album has been released… Check out this rather poppy version of what she once was… (almost) similar to the road that lady soverign took, but MUCH MUCH less tacky….
